Popephoenix Paint Practice 001

There are many things that I excel at: Illustration, graphic design, making women laugh, playing StarCraft 2, being a good dad… The one thing that has always escaped me these many years has been my ability to paint. My skill in that is god awful. I’ve tried time and time again and I just get frustrated. So over the weekend. I bought a set of acrylic paints, brushes and a pad with the goal to do like I did with everything else… teach myself how to paint. Eventually I’ll take a class but for now I’ll just mess around and see what transpires. What do you think?

As we all know… my painting skills aren’t the best. They are almost abysmal. BUT I’m trying and in the end, isn’t that what’s its all about? Improvement? Desire? At least that’s what I’ve been telling myself to keep motivated. I did this in Art Rage this semi-free painting program that works for both mac and pc. I looking to get my hands on painter so that I can get a little more precise because the tools in AR are pretty loose.

New submission for Illustration Friday. This weeks theme is Subterranean and this is my interpretation. Only thing that came to mind was some Morlock-esque, Moleman, deep cave dwellers.

More painting on the quick fast. I know the the file name of this image may say 30 minutes but in reality it took about 45. Tweaking lighting, shaping the face, trying to get the emotion right. There’s probably more that I could do to this but I think I’ll leave it the way it is.

Funny thing, that I’ve learned so far this year is that I really don’t have a set subject matter. Some people are goofy, sexy, political, abstract or realistic. My mentality/subject matter just switches each day. Which I enjoy. I wonder sometimes if I should ever just stick with just one subject and just keep pounding away at it day after day. Maybe I’ll try that next month. Maybe I’ll do the opposite. Should you have one focus as an artist?

Welcome to another edition of Pocket Painter. This yet another image created on my iPhone as I travel to and fro on the NYC Transit line. If my train goes off the track… oops sorry got caught up. There isn’t a deep and distinct story behind this image like other images I’ve posted but its interesting nonetheless. Maybe we, together, as a community, can create a story for this image.  Here’s mine:

She’s a mutant who just realized that her boyfriend is cheating on her and she just started powering up to confront him.

The alarms just went off in the vault, bathing her in red light and now she must figure out her escape.

Uhhh, that’s all I got for now. I’d love to hear what you think the story is behind this image.

Today’s drawing comes courtesy of a failed attempt to submit this piece to Illustration Friday’s Weekly contest. I started this last week but finished it after the deadline. I’ve been really busy this week with freelance and trying to finish up this book. So a lot of work has been pushed to the sideline.

Again another take on my painting skill its totally experimental. Eventually, paint shall submit to my whims but right now, lol, its really hit or miss. I think since today is a snow day here in NY its also going to be a double post day. See you guys later.
