Things I love

I won’t sit here and say that I’m a huge Freddie Mercury fan. I know a couple Queen songs and those are probably the most famous ones. Say what you will about Google being this soulless behemoth set out to control the internet. Thing is when these two beings collide its really awesome.  When you combine great music with dope After Effects animation you get the awesome video above. This is how you pay tribute to someone.

Brianwood-Public Domain 2 artbook

I was sent this link to BRIAN WOOD’s free book Public Domain 2 by my good friend Cameron Moore today. True to his word, its free, its huge (115megs, 132 pages) its great to look through. I suggest you download it asap. Its worth the bandwidth and you can also buy the physical copy as well. But while looking at these great black and white sketches I had a thought…

http://the99percent.com/videos/6806/frans-johansson-the-secret-truth-about-executing-great-ideas

The link above will take you to a terrific discussion by Frans Johansson about the executing great ideas. His biggest discovery is that people who execute great ideas do two things.

  1. They create tons of ideas more than you can possibly believe. EX. Picasso created 20,000 pieces of art in his lifetime
  2. Push through your idea even when everyone believes your crazy.

No. 2 is probably my biggest flaw. I have tons of ideas that sit in creative limbo cast they by the evil entities Time and Responsibility. The most fundamental idea I’ve learned this year is that if you want to do something you’ve find time to do it. If there’s time to watch a movie, go to work or hang out with your friends, there’s time to work on that project you want complete.

One of my favorite quotes is from Muhammad Ali “If you want to see your dreams come true, you have to wake up first.”

Today I’m in a posting mode. I know lately I’ve been just posting images, well because that’s what this site is about but I also have to post more of my inspirations and things that I love… Tracy Morgan on Daily Show is one of those things. If you didn’t see this last night here is the entire interview in all its Wizardry, free Whopper with cheese and Random joke glory. Tracy Morgan, you are a insane genius!

Press the little play button for comedy the big one acts a little funny.

PIXELS by PATRICK JEAN.
Uploaded by onemoreprod. – Arts and animation videos.

Two things I love are Video Games and New York. This video manages to combine them into some strange 8-bit version of ID4, I movie I hate… well I hate the second half of that movie. And they’re making not one but two sequels… but I digress. Patrick Jean creates a incredible video depicting the 8 bit assault on NY. Great concept, cinematography and execution. More projects should be like this.

So this week I did a flash back to 1995 when I used to work at Youth Communication. Its here that I got my start in the world of graphic design and desktop publishing. My friend and mentor/big brother/father figure, Efrain Reyes, gave me a job when I had no experience, no degree and  no sense of fashion (I wore braids, shades and occasionally overalls.) My first published piece, illustrated cover and website I ever built was achieved here. I also learned about what it takes to put together a monthly magazine doing hand pressed layouts, using self developed photos and a waxing machine. Sorry about all the packs of film I ruined… it was all part of the learning experience. At YC, I learned about computers and gained my out right disgust for Quark and till this day I won’t use that program, I hate it so much. I’ve turned down jobs because that’s all they used. Ahhh Thanks for the memories Youth Comm.

To make a long story short, Efrain and YC set me out on a journey to be the artist that I am today if not for them I would’ve never had the knowledge or the fortitude to teach myself the ins and out of design if not for the things I learned at my first real job. I was a terrible employee, I was always late, made tons of errors and never really appreciated the opportunity that I had. But Efrain was a patient man and I really thank him for all that he’s done for me so when the opportunity arrived to help out I was willing to do so. Its not much but its my way of  saying thank you for all that you did for me over the years.

Thanks Efrain.
