How to feel miserable as an artist

I was bouncing around twitter today when I came across the tumblr page of Filthy Fabulous and found this little diddy. It basically breaks down the mentality of an artist. How we constantly doubt ourselves, worry what others think about our work, get complacent and even let others dictate our own creative flow. Its all self-deprecating and very unproductive. Now I won’t say that this short list will be the beginning of change for me… I’ve grown out of that phase. But it does present a challenge to fight against my normal thoughts and creative processes. Hit the break for a bit more inspiration…

http://the99percent.com/videos/6806/frans-johansson-the-secret-truth-about-executing-great-ideas

The link above will take you to a terrific discussion by Frans Johansson about the executing great ideas. His biggest discovery is that people who execute great ideas do two things.

  1. They create tons of ideas more than you can possibly believe. EX. Picasso created 20,000 pieces of art in his lifetime
  2. Push through your idea even when everyone believes your crazy.

No. 2 is probably my biggest flaw. I have tons of ideas that sit in creative limbo cast they by the evil entities Time and Responsibility. The most fundamental idea I’ve learned this year is that if you want to do something you’ve find time to do it. If there’s time to watch a movie, go to work or hang out with your friends, there’s time to work on that project you want complete.

One of my favorite quotes is from Muhammad Ali “If you want to see your dreams come true, you have to wake up first.”

I, if you don’t know… talk a lot of shit. So much so that I feel it needs to be posted on the web not only in blog form but in audio form as well.  For the last 2 months, Duane, Cam and myself have been shaping and shining our podcasting skills for the glorious day we release our brand of humor and commentary onto the world. That dedications is brought to you today, the internet loving masses, in the form of The Table of Truth Podcast: Season One (ToT).

Ladies, have you ever wondered what it would be like to sit in on conversation of guys to see what they talk about? Deep secret man questions that you hear about but never know anything about well… this is not the podcast for you, lol. Seriously, ToT is that plus its conversations about current events (politics, race, sports), entertainment (music, movies, TV, 24) and relationships (men and women, dating, love) spoken from our 80-90′s childhood and delivered through our 0ver 30 mindsets.

I would love for you to check it out and give us some feed back. Maybe you have a question, maybe you wanna sit at the table and let your voice be heard. Pull up a chair, bring a bottle of your finest Liquors and welcome to the Table of Truth.

Erik Jones is a dope illustrator that combines detailed rendered textures with solid blocks of color. He works mostly with women and puts them in really crazy situations, using vibrant colors and highly detailed hair lines. I love his use of texture and composition. I’ve posted a couple other images after the jump but check out his deviant art page for more: theirison.deviantart.com/

PIXELS by PATRICK JEAN.
Uploaded by onemoreprod. – Arts and animation videos.

Two things I love are Video Games and New York. This video manages to combine them into some strange 8-bit version of ID4, I movie I hate… well I hate the second half of that movie. And they’re making not one but two sequels… but I digress. Patrick Jean creates a incredible video depicting the 8 bit assault on NY. Great concept, cinematography and execution. More projects should be like this.

This just blew my mind. I know all about green screen and its effects in movies as it allows even the lowest budget to film in places that would be otherwise impossible to reach. But I didn’t know who rampant it was in television. Law and Order, Heroes, Monk, just to name a few of the Big name shows that use green screen. What I find even crazier is the amount and the relatively normal places they are green screening (is that a word?). NYC courthouse? A San Francisco street? The Andes Mountains?!? It is truly possible to be any where in the world and say you were there and no one would know the difference. This is awesome and scary in the same paranoid breath.
