Charlie and his imaginary friend by Popephoenix and Qimmah Saafir

Introducing, Charlie and his imaginary friend, my 4th children’s book as illustrator. The story was written by my good friend Q over at Life on Que and together we make a great team.  You know what would be awesome, buying the book, rating it and telling all your friends to buy it for their kids. That would be truly awesome! I’d love to hear what you think about the book after you purchase it. You can find the link here:

For the last month I’ve been working sporadically on my children’s book finalizing the character design and art style for it. The only thing I haven’t been doing is actually finishing pages. With that said I have to focus on the that solely for the next two weeks. My self induced deadline is February 15th. In order to accomplish that I have to change up the format just slightly. You will still get new artwork posted on the site it just wont necessarily be “brand new.” I find this a healthy compromise that I can live with… Live illustrations return in 14 days. Peace.

Little back story. My best friend Qimmah and I began this idea last year of making a series of books; we have a few ideas but this one story stuck out. There won’t be any information about the story or the characters (besides the teaser image above) until we’re ready to launch. In its place I will talk about the progress and what goes on during this project.

Spent the day working on the main character’s design and color way. After a couple of hours fighting with the style of the images I finally settled on this vector based style, with gradients and textures. Q and I also debated distinct character attributes over G-chat, which turned out to be very fruitful. I think the final product will come out pretty nice and most people will like it.

It took me a long time to come to the decision on that we chose as originally Q wanted a more traditional watercolor paint style. But as everyone knows, painting is my kryptonite. As long as I’ve tried to, I have yet to grasp a style in paint that I was happy with. So for a few months last year I struggled trying to paint this book to no avail. It wasn’t until today that I forced myself to stop trying something that was foreign and do something that made sense and was familiar. With that decided I can now take the next step in designing my fourth children’s book.
